GYROSCOPE COMPONENT
Application: Aerospace
Problem: Production lots of this guidance system component routinely failed to properly control the release of CO2 gas under 2,000 psi, which was contained by a very thin diaphram. One, we were told, failed on a procurement officer's desk.
Investigation revealed that a machining mismatch was the source of the problem.
Solution: To correct the problem, we replaced a costly, error-prone form milling operation with a stamping and coining operation which, combined with conventional machining, has since produced parts without a single field failure.
