Progressive Die Metal Stampings

Designing and Building Precision Progressive Dies

When you know that your needs will be met and your expectations exceeded, that’s peace of mind. And that’s the most important thing we manufacturer at Hobson & Motzer. With over 9 decades of industry experience state-of-the-art technology, stringent quality control systems and a team that shares the same trait as the product they create – precision tools and flawless metal stampings.

At Hobson and Motzer, we design and build quality tooling for medical stampings, automotive, consumer, industrial electronics and aerospace metal stampings. Besides supplying precision progressive dies, we also supply precision metal stampings and components for your quality-critical applications.

Within our 50,000 square foot facility, we utilize straightsided and knuckle presses. Our full-service tool room is staffed with more than 30 toolmakers working two shifts. And our design department runs cutting-edge 3-D modeling software. We operate a QSR9000 and ISO9001 certified facility, and we can design a specific quality plan to fit your most demanding and ever changing requirements.

  1. Die Designing: Our die design isn’t just good. It’s good and fast. We utilize 3-D modeling software and can import file formats including IDES, .dwg and .dxf to speed your die through design. The software is linked to production equipment in the toolroom geometry for programming wire EDM and CN machines. This provides seamless transfer of information and error-free manufacturing of your dies and components.
  2. Tool Validation: You demand critical features. We fully detail each tool. Our Coordinate Measuring Machine, along with various other types of inspection equipment, is a vital asset in validating various tool components.
  3. Tool Features: You want experience on your project. So our staff of toolmakers and engineers gives you over 1,000 years of combined experience. We design and build ultra-precision dies, used to produce components for tightly-toleranced, quality-critical applications. These dies could include insert construction with replaceable tooling components, guided punches and hardened punch holders, back-up pads and depending on volume and application, quick interchangeable subdie sets for minimum down time. Tools can be designed and built to hold punch and die clearances as close to .0002” for thin materials.
  4. Optical Grinding (Roll Form Grinding): With a magnification range from 20-to-1 to 100-to-1, our Optical Grinders can create intricate shapes for tools as well as for custom designed rolls, utilized in shaping wire and rolled metal strip stock.
  5. Wide Range of Dies: From 3” x 3” to 60” x 30”, we build dies small or large. They are designed to your specific specifications, from low cost consumable tools to precision high-speed carbide dies with in-die sensors to protect your valuable investment.
  6. Wire EDM Machines: An essential step in meeting your needs is building tightly-toleranced progressive stamping dies for critical applications and when required, custom prototypes. Our EDM machines are self-threading, use a wide range of wire diameters from .004” to .010” and when combined with Esprit programming, these machines can run 24-hours-a-day, 7-days-a-week.
  7. Spare Tooling Components: During the design and fabrication cycle, we determine, along with you, the critical areas of the tool and we can provide a spares program for each die. The spares are kept either as finished components or in a blank form, which can be quickly turned into a finished component. If you run dies in-house, we can design, build and provide spares for your in-house tooling.

To be the best toolmakers, we must excel at precision metal stamping. So that’s Progressive Die Metal Stampingsjust what we do. Not only can we design and build your custom die, we can debug it, test it and run it.

Our metal stamping department includes straight-sided, knuckle and “c” frame presses. The straight-sided presses range from 30 tons to 180 tons with bedsizes as long as 60”. They are capable of running speeds from 60 to 1200 spm. The knuckle presses range to 250 tons and are ideal for coining difficult, tightly-toleranced components in materials such as stainless steel, low carbon steel and copper alloys.

Typical applications include medical device components, automotive metal stampings, consumer and industrial electronics and range in volume from 10,000 to 100,000,000 parts and above.
